It has often been said that you can’t build a house on sand, meaning that you need a strong foundation, or your home won’t last. Obviously, homes aren’t built on sand, but did you know that your home’s foundation could still be threatened? Water is a powerful force, and if you don’t have sufficient drainage and grading, that water is going to eat away at the foundation, leaving you with a serious and costly problem. Here are some signs that you may have an issue that needs to be addressed.
- Water pools around your home. Walk around your home after it rains and check for standing water. There shouldn’t be any up close to the foundation. If you see water pooling elsewhere on the property and it doesn’t drain off for quite a while, you may need drainage and grading services to get the proper slope away from the foundation.
- Humidity issues in your home. Does your HVAC system struggle to remove humidity from your home? Have you noticed mold or mildew? Do you feel uncomfortable even though the thermostat is set appropriately? These can all be signs that you have high humidity in your home, which means there is excess water somewhere, even if you don’t see it.
- Some lawn areas are extra lush. If you have areas of your landscaping that seem to grow faster and are lusher than surrounding areas, they are being made exceptionally happy due to extra wet conditions. Alternatively, you could see areas where things don’t grow well when they are plants that don’t like “wet feet.” If the drainage and grading is as it should be, everything should get an even amount of water.
